Zain, Africell Introduce Mobile Money in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has deployed an SMS-based mobile payment service dubbed 'Splash', writes The Standard. Customers are able to transfer money by completing a free registration, purchasing a 'SplashCash' card and sending the card's code by SMS to any number on the accredited networks. The recipient then exchanges the SplashCash card for cash at any agent location.

Splash is based on MoreMagic Solutions' MWallet technology and designed for African markets. The service was launched earlier this month in Freetown and is provided through a partnership between local bank Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and wireless operators Zain Sierra Leone and Africell, which recently acquired Tigo (Millicom SL).
